On 4th of October UNICA and UGAF trainees Marta and Liisi visited the Sustainable Barbecue at VUB !
The sustainable barbecue at the beginning of the academic year becoming a tradition at VUB. Sustainability is one of the key principles the university tries to live by, so at the picnic no plastic cups, dishes or cutlery are used. At the entrance a fair-trade cocktail was offered. Fair-trade aims to help producers in developing countries work under better trading conditions and promote sustainability. Fish offered at the barbecue had MSC label. The MSC's fishery certification program and seafood ecolabel recognize and reward sustainable fishing. Desserts were offered from stands which introduced sustainable initiatives and organizations active at the university. That way participants could get information and ask questions from organizations of their interest. All drinks served were fair trade. On the meat menu, one vegetable appetizer was included, and for vegetarians there was an attractive fresh veggie menu on the barbecue.
The speed-friending helps students new at the Universiteit to meet people. They join the speed-friending tables during the sustainable BBQ and get to know lots of people from near and far.
