As the outcome of the UNICA General Assembly 2010, University of Oslo took the leading role in the initiative and invited UNICA members to participate in the 1st UNICA Green Academic Footprint (UGAF) Workshop: Universities Committed and Connected Towards Environmental Sustainability, 3-4 May 2011. Participants from 10 UNICA member universities engaged in discussions incited by the keynote speeches, covering urgent global challenges as well as the role of universities in promoting environmental sustainability. The host university and the participants presented their universities sustainability profile and exchanged some good green practices. The Workshop gave an impetus for the creation of UGAF Working Group, focusing on environmental sustainability at universities bringing together five institutions:

Since the establishment of the Working Group, its members have held regular conference calls as well as occasional meetings at WG universities. The Group, chaired by Jorulf Brøvig Silde (University of Oslo), works actively on common strategy and actions regarding environmental sustainability at universities.
At the UNICA General Assembly 2011, Tallinn University, 13-15 October 2011, the work of the UFAG Working Group has received a strong support from the UNICA members and the UNICA Steering Committee. The Group’s objective is to launch a UNICA “network within a network” committed to increasing positive environmental impact of higher education institutions.
